The “Aerolula” purchased by the petista in 2005 can only accommodate up to 39 passengers and has limited flight range.
After completing 10 trips abroad, spending nearly 30 consecutive days outside of Brazil, and hosting a meeting in Brasília with South American presidents, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) now wants to replace the presidential plane used by the Palácio do Planalto.
Lula has complained that the current aircraft is insufficient for his commitments and has requested a larger one. The request has been accepted by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), which is expected to retrofit another plane for delivery to the President and his team.
Lula’s new plane will be an Airbus A330-200, purchased in 2022 for $80 million for military use. It will replace the “Aerolula,” an Airbus A319CJ acquired during Lula’s first term in 2005, which was also used by his successors, including Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
Lula aims to have a plane with greater flight autonomy, which would allow for intercontinental trips with fewer stops for checks and refueling. The new presidential aircraft will feature a bedroom with a double bed and a spacious room for official meetings.
