During the hearing at the TJDFT (Federal District Court of Justice), Judge Mário-Zam Belmiro insinuated that the victims would have to work their entire lives to accumulate R$ 50,000.
During the trial of a lawsuit involving compensation for death, moral and material damages, judges from the Federal District and Territories Court of Justice (TJDFT) were examining the claims made by a family when a statement made by Judge Mário-Zam Belmiro sparked outrage.
Expressing his point of view, Belmiro defended a reduction in the amount of the claim and insinuated that R$ 50,000, the amount suggested by another judge, is a lot of money for people living in rural areas.
“For someone like this, from the rural area, to receive R$ 50,000, they would have to work their entire life and maybe, just maybe, accumulate [the money]. Here, they would receive it all at once. So, I want to say, R$ 50,000 would be very significant. I am not capable of awarding more than that,” declared the judge.
In 2020, the family filing the lawsuit experienced hours of horror after a high-voltage cable rupture resulted in the death of a relative and a fractured femur for another.
