Brazil’s Federal Police are investigating whether public officials accepted improper advantages to benefit Fábio Luís Lula da Silva, the son of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, according to single-source reporting by O Globo.

The inquiry is at an early stage and focuses on whether members of the federal government performed official acts in exchange for money or other benefits. Investigators are examining whether officials may have used public agencies or the Planalto Palace, the seat of Brazil’s executive branch, to favor Lulinha, as he is known.

Three Federal Inquiries

Lulinha is the subject of three investigations into suspected influence peddling. The cases are being handled by Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF), the country’s highest court. Justice André Mendonça is the rapporteur in two of the inquiries, while Justice Flávio Dino oversees the third.

The central question is whether public authorities received resources to act illegally on Lulinha’s behalf. The investigation does not establish that such payments occurred, and the available report does not describe any formal accusation against him.

Investigators are expected to summon Lulinha for an in-person deposition. According to O Globo, the Federal Police believe that his personal appearance could help clarify the suspicions because of the nature of the cases.

Link to Lobbyist

Lulinha has lived in Spain since 2024. He came under scrutiny because of his relationship with lobbyist Roberta Luchsinger, whom investigators identify as a key figure in an alleged influence-peddling scheme during Lula’s third presidency.

Luchsinger is also being investigated in a separate case involving suspected diversion of funds from Brazil’s National Social Security Institute (INSS). The report does not provide further details about the alleged scheme or specify what actions investigators believe may have benefited Lulinha.

The inquiry places the president’s family within a broader set of investigations involving alleged access to government institutions. However, the information released so far concerns investigative lines of inquiry rather than proven wrongdoing.

Possible Deposition

President Lula has said publicly that his son would return to Brazil if formally accused or summoned by the courts. Lulinha’s lawyer, Marco Aurélio Carvalho, has likewise stated that his client would appear to provide explanations if called by authorities.

The Federal Police have not yet publicly established whether Lulinha will be formally charged. The next major step reported by O Globo is a possible in-person deposition, which could give investigators an opportunity to question him directly about his relationship with Luchsinger and any contacts with public officials.
