Federal District Governor Celina Leão said former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro will announce her political plans by August and remains on track to run for a Senate seat representing Brasília, according to single-source reporting from Revista Oeste.

Leão made the remarks on Saturday, July 4, during a public event in Santa Maria, an administrative region of Brazil’s Federal District. She sought to counter speculation that Michelle, the wife of former President Jair Bolsonaro, could withdraw from the October election.

A Pending Decision

Leão said Michelle had temporarily stepped back for personal reasons but insisted the Senate project remained active. The Federal District elects senators to Brazil’s National Congress, the bicameral legislature in Brasília.

"I am certain she will be a candidate," Leão said, according to Revista Oeste.

The governor added that Michelle would take time to care for herself and her husband, but should give an answer by August. The statement matters because Michelle has become one of the most visible figures in the Liberal Party (PL), Bolsonaro’s party, and has been discussed as a possible name for the right in Brasília’s Senate race.

Party Tensions

The uncertainty intensified after Valdemar Costa Neto, the national president of the PL, recently said Michelle had indicated she wanted to stay out of the October contest. Leão disputed that reading and said Michelle’s silence reflected a need for rest, not a decision to abandon electoral plans.

Michelle’s future became a subject of wider speculation after she left the leadership of PL Mulher, the party’s women’s wing, on Tuesday, June 30. Her departure followed a public disagreement with Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, Jair Bolsonaro’s son and Michelle’s stepson.

According to Revista Oeste, the dispute centered on the party’s electoral slate in Ceará, a northeastern state where the PL has been negotiating candidacies and alliances. The source did not provide further details on the internal arrangement or on how the disagreement may affect the party’s national strategy.

Why It Matters

A Michelle Bolsonaro Senate bid would add another high-profile Bolsonaro family name to the 2026 campaign cycle. It would also test the PL’s ability to manage internal disputes while presenting a unified ticket in key states and in the Federal District.

For now, no formal candidacy has been announced. The clearest timetable offered in the report came from Leão, who said Michelle should make her decision public by August. Until then, the former first lady’s role in the election remains politically significant but unresolved.
