Brazil’s final high-profile televised debate before the October 4 presidential vote was canceled after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro both declined to take part. TV Globo, the country’s largest free-to-air broadcaster, had scheduled the debate for October 1. Reuters and the Associated Press reported the cancellation independently.

Lula had skipped the year’s debates. Bolsonaro had initially planned to attend Globo’s event but withdrew after Lula said he would not participate. Globo said it canceled after receiving late court rulings that changed previously agreed rules, including restrictions on referring to candidates who were absent. The AP reported that Globo described the rulings as creating “legal uncertainty.” Neither report establishes that the courts ordered the cancellation itself; the network made that decision after the rulings altered the format.

The absence of the two leading candidates removed the last planned opportunity for voters to watch them challenge each other before the first round. Reuters noted that other networks had also canceled debates after both candidates declined to attend. Other candidates were expected to participate in Globo’s program, but the event did not proceed.

The episode raised an accountability question in a tightly contested national campaign: voters received fewer direct exchanges between the two front-runners on the country’s largest broadcast stage. It also exposed the interaction between campaign strategy and electoral rules. The available reports describe the candidates’ public decisions and the broadcaster’s stated reason, but do not prove a shared motive or establish that either withdrawal was unlawful. The election remained scheduled for October 4, with a runoff set for October 25 if no presidential candidate received a majority of valid votes.
