Brazil’s House Speaker, Hugo Motta (Republicanos‑PB), has appointed federal deputy Reginaldo Lopes of the Workers’ Party (PT) to preside over the mixed committee that will examine the provisional measure (MP) aimed at ending the so‑called “taxa das blusinhas.” According to CNN Brasil, the announcement followed a meeting between Motta, Senate President Davi Alcolumbre (União‑AP) and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) on Wednesday.
The taxa das blusinhas is a 20% import tax applied to international online purchases of up to US$ 50. The tax was suspended in May when the MP was published, but the measure will lose its validity on September 8 unless it is approved by both chambers of Congress before that date.
Lopes, who served as rapporteur‑general of the 2024 tax reform and authored a bill to eliminate the 6x1 work week, will oversee the committee’s work. As is customary for such mixed panels, the rapporteur position will be filled by a senator. The committee is expected to be installed the week of September 1.
The appointment is part of a broader “concentrated effort” week set for August 31‑September 4, during which leaders plan to advance priority federal agendas, including the Constitutional Amendment on Security and the bill on Critical Minerals.
