Federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) on Monday criticized what he described as pressure from left-wing supporters for Brazilian artists and celebrities to publicly declare their voting intentions ahead of the 2026 presidential election.

In a video posted to social media, Ferreira said political support from public figures should arise naturally. "If someone wants to support us publicly, they will be more than welcome, they will be a hero. But this correspondence needs to be natural," he said. The deputy argued that backers of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), a presidential candidate, should respect each person's decision to speak out or remain silent.

Ferreira characterized the alleged pressure as intrinsic to left-wing ideology. "The left demands forced applause because it is in the nature of their ideology. Forced respect, forced affection, forced charity, forced love," he said.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has received more public declarations of support from the artistic community than Flávio Bolsonaro, according to a tally by Poder360. Among Lula's backers is actor José de Abreu, who publicly urged his colleagues to take a stand against what he labeled fascism.

The exchange highlights the growing role of cultural figures in Brazil's polarized political landscape, where both sides seek validation from the entertainment industry. Ferreira's remarks frame the dynamic as a question of authenticity versus coercion, while his critics argue that public figures have a responsibility to take positions on democratic issues.

Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, is widely seen as a leading contender for the right-wing nomination in 2026. Lula, serving his third non-consecutive term, has not formally declared whether he will seek re-election.
